Dads Of Steel: Odd Facts About Superman’s Dads
Superman is so Super, just one father won’t cut it. It takes two Dads to raise the Man of Tomorrow. Here are some interesting details on both Dads of Steel.
Both Robin Hoods Are My Father
In the film Man of Steel, Kevin Costner and Russell Crowe played the parts of Superman’s adopted father and biological father. Interestingly enough, both men played Robin Hood in previous films.
Pa Kent Is Alive!
Fans of the original Superman film, Smallville and Man of Steel are quite familiar with the fact that Jonathan Kent dies. This is either to represent that with all his power, Superman can’t save everyone, a great sacrifice or…nothing at all. Now Pa Kent has died in several scenarios. However, for the most part, the character has mostly been represented as alive. The original film made the change and it just stuck.
One In The Same?
In the television series Young Justice, show creator Greg Weisman had a creative reimagining of the DC Comics universe. While many of his re-interpretations are hinted at through the series, there is one, that as of yet, has yet to be revealed.
That theory is that Jonathan Kent and Jor-El are actually one in the same. Weisman’s world tends to be a work of more practical fiction. The idea that Jor-El and Lara joined their son in the escape pod to Earth is more accessible. Fans are eagerly waiting for this to be confirmed in upcoming episodes.
Lex I Am Your Father!
A script for a Superman film that was thankfully never made featured a Superman and a Lex Luthor who were in fact brothers. The idea was that Jor-El went on scouting missions to other planets, including Earth, which is how he knew it was suitable to send Superman to. Upon one visit, he had an affair with an Earth female, Lex’s mother, and Lex was conceived. Hollywood has a tendency to over work connections between characters. Relationships building organically is preferred.
Good Ole Boy
Famous for playing Bo Duke in the Dukes of Hazzard, John Schneider was cast to play Jonathan Kent. Now usually, Superman’s adopted parents were depicted as elderly. This was the first time where they were cast to be middle-aged.
Dad Before Zod?
In Smallville, Terrance Stamp, who played General Zod in the original Superman films, voices Jor-El.
Acting’s Finest
Marlon Brando is the finest actor of his generation and he was cast as Jor-El in the original Superman film. Despite appearing in the film for a brief amount of time, Brando received over 3 million dollars as well as a cut of the gross. Afterwards, he sued Warner Bros. because he felt cheated out of his cut on the gross of the film. This is also the reason why we see Superman’s mother in the sequels and not Brando.
