CBS recently debuted the “First Look” at Young Sheldon, the spin-off of The Big Bang Theory, following the childhood of Sheldon Cooper. We sat through the five minute clip to determine if dads will love the new show, or hate the new show.
Reasons Dads Will Love It
It’s on CBS, a network whose slogan might as well be “Hey Dads, Here’s Something We Think You’ll Enjoy.”
It follows a childhood in the 90s (well, 1989, but basically the 90s), which is just enough nostalgia that a dad can get behind that.
Apparently there’s a scene where they say grace before dinner. Dads like that. Not enough shows have families saying grace anymore.
There’s voice over narration. Voice over narration is great for dads. It means they don’t have to pay such close attention but they’ll still get the gist of things.
Reasons Dads Will Hate It
It’s a nerdy comedy taking away time from procedurals on CBS, a network whose second slogan might as well be “Hey Dads, Want Some More CSI or NCIS?”
It follows a childhood in 1989, which is not the 70s and doesn’t count as the 80s, aka the Dad Childhood Sweet Spot.
The scene with grace also has a food fight. Dads hate food fights. Look how pissed this dad looks.
There’s no laugh track on this show. Dads love laugh tracks.
Final Verdict
Most dads will watch it, because it’s on CBS. They probably won’t be obsessed with it, but most dads will deem it “fine.” They’ll also wrongly assume that it’s all their kids’ favorite show, and will continue watching it thinking it’ll give them one more thing to talk to them about. (It won’t. No one under 25 will watch this show.)
