Tecmo Bowl
Similar to NBA Jam, Tecmo Bowl is a deceptively in-depth game that favors the person who can best manipulate the system. Originally a double screen arcade machine in Japan, it was a generic video football game in the beginning.
Then when it came to American consoles, the idea to use NFL players and teams took off instantaneously. This game is easily dismissed as only a mere step above electric football to many young fans of the Madden series who think that it’s too old to be any good.
However, there are serious skills required to running a play with only a very limited amount of buttons. Also, there is a psychological factor with anticipating what plays to pick and what plays not to pick. Finally, there is a big advantage in knowing the NFL at the time. Choosing the Oilers or Raiders is practically cheating.
