While lecturing his 16-year-old son about the importance of hard work, local dad Gerry Rockfeld discussed his first summer job, and it sounds a lot like it was illegal child labor.
“You know, back in my day, we believed in hard work,” the 46-year-old father-of-three was overhead saying. “I remember the summer of ’85, I was 13 years old, and I wanted to earn money on my own. And they were pretty desperate for help down at the quarry…”
Rockfeld’s description of the job, which involved physical exertion and the breaking of at least a dozen labor laws, seemed a bit extreme, given that his son was considering working part-time as a T-ball umpire.
