Chicago Bears fan Bob Benson is already yelling at his TV, and it’s only the preseason. And this time it’s not about his team’s inability to score, or stop the run.
“It’s not even football anymore!” he shouted to no one in particular. “If they’re going to call a 15-yard penalty on that, God help me, I will start watching soccer instead!”
Benson was referring to the new NFL helmet rule, which penalizes players for leading with the helmet when tackling an opposing player. The goal is to help prevent injuries and concussions, but the rule is vague and has been called inconsistently during the preseason.
“Just wait until this costs us a game in the regular season,” Benson fumed. “It makes no sense! How is he supposed to tackle the guy…with his fingers?”
According to Benson’s wife Shelly, this level of anger before the first game does not bode well.
“I walked by the living room and he was completely red in the face and screaming at the TV,” she said. “I can’t even imagine what it’s going to be like against the Packers in week one.”
