Austin, Texas dad and self-proclaimed “all-around sports expert” John Friedericks revealed to his son this week the one true secret to winning in competitive athletics. “Son, a lot of guys out there got talent, but the one thing that you need to win? That’s hustle. Gotta show some hustle out there, son! That’s how you win!”
Friedericks, whose son is seven years old and playing in a soccer, baseball, and floor hockey league, insisted that hustle is the one true formula for success. “You gotta show hustle out there, and if you do, trust me, the coaches will notice,” said the father, who happens to be the coach of his son’s baseball team.
Even though his son plays largely in leagues that do not keep score, he continued to hammer home the importance of hustle, without really bothering to define the term other than “running a lot.” His son’s floor hockey team went on to lose later that day, 21 to 3.
